We are delighted to welcome John Doyle to the Sensational Kids team from mid May 2019. He will carry out psychological assessments at our Munster base at the West Cork Technology Park, Clonakilty, Co. Cork. He will be available on Saturdays from 9am-4.30pm, commencing on 18th May and operate on a bi-monthly basis. Booking early is recommended to secure a timely appointment.
John (MA Educational Psychology) has been working as a senior psychologist since 1995 and brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. His area of expertise lies in child assessments, direct support to children and adolescents and mentoring staff within the residential child care services. Furthermore, John has been periodically involved in mentoring students and providing supervision to undergraduate and postgraduate students of psychology, both as an employee of organisations and in private practice.
An educational psychological assessment may be necessary if your child is having difficulties in school and is required to identify if your child needs additional support in school, such as a special needs assistant, resource support, assistive technology or extra help when doing exams in secondary school. John will assess your child’s IQ and cognitive ability and this assessment is necessary to determine if a child has dyslexia and to help our occupational therapy team diagnose dyspraxia/ DCD.
The assessment itself can vary in length, but typically we would say allow two hours as it is quite comprehensive. You will be given a detailed written report a few weeks after your child’s assessment and this will include relevant history, test results, conclusions and recommendations for addressing the concerns emerging from the assessment. John needs to get a detailed background of the child from parents, individuals, schools or any other relevant sources in order to furnish the report as comprehensively and accurately as possible. Conclusions are based on this information along with the initial testing.
Each educational assessment is valid for two years. Generally, a child will need an assessment when starting primary school, transitioning to secondary school and undertaking exams in secondary school to assess their additional needs and access to services.
The cost of the complete educational psychological assessment (including written report) is €495 and a deposit of €50 is required when booking. The balance of €455 will be due on the day of the assessment. In the unlikely event that you need to cancel your appointment, 48 hours-notice is required. This allows us to re-allocate the appointment to someone else.
