Educational Psychological Assessments

An Educational Psychological Assessment may be required if your child is struggling to keep up in school. An educational psychological assessment is required to determine a child's needs for additional resources in school such as assistive technology, special needs assistants, resource hours, or for accommodations during exams in secondary school. An educational psychologist assesses a child's IQ and cognitive (intellectual) functioning. The assessment is the assessment required to assess for dyslexia or to assist occupational therapists to confirm a diagnosis of dyspraxia / DCD.

We take pride in providing the highest quality occupational therapy services to children of all abilities.

Our unique state-of-the-art sensory gym and therapeutic rooms together with the innovative equipment are designed to mirror playful activities to the child, whilst the therapist draws upon extensive training to provide challenging therapeutic activities aimed at developing greater capabilities and skill levels.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is skilled treatment that helps a child achieve independence and ability to participate in all facets of his or her life, play, self-care, school and community participation, and socialising with family and friends. Occupational Therapy gives children and their families the "skills for the job of living" necessary for independent, fulfilling and satisfying lives.

Occupational therapists are concerned with developing the skills and underlying abilities children need to perform their main everyday ‘occupations’ of playing, learning and engaging with friends and family.

Our occupational therapists focus on developing skills through meaningful activity. We work with children to assist them to acquire the necessary skills and the underlying sensory or physical components for daily activities at home (e.g. eating and dressing), preschool (e.g. drawing, cutting and jumping) and school (e.g. handwriting, attention, memory).

Occupational therapy is also appropriate for children who find making friends difficult or have trouble coping with social situations. Our aim is to enable children to develop and generalise skills and abilities in order to be able to participate to their full potential.

Occupational Therapists at Sensational Kids will investigate your child’s sensory processing as well as skills such as gross and fine motor skills, pretend play skills, self care skills, handwriting, attention, planning and organisation, and visual perception and how this contributes to their day to day functioning.

Occupational Therapy helps your child develop their functional performance skills.

These include:

  • Attention & Concentration
  • Fine motor skills (including bilateral hand use, dexterity and handwriting)
  • Gross motor skills (including balance, postural control and coordination)
  • Handwriting
  • Organisational Skills
  • Transitioning
  • Self care skills such as dressing and feeding
  • Self Regulation
  • Sensory Processing
  • Social skills
  • Visual Processing

We follow recommended best practice and so your first appointment with Sensational Kids will be an appointment with the therapist to meet with the parents/guardians. During this parent consultation appointment, parents can discuss their concerns about their child frankly with the therapist without negatively  impacting on the child's self-esteem. It also gives the therapist the opportunity to go through the developmental history to obtain a thorough understanding of the difficulties your child is experiencing. Together the therapist and parents can agree a family centred plan and therapy goals specifically for your child.
