Speech & Language Tips for the Car Believe it or not, you can get Speech & Language practice in during car journeys on your Staycation this summer! Sit in the back with your child if they need eye contact and visual clues (e.g. pointing, gesture). Car games like I Spy or a modified I Spy offer the perfect opportunity for turn taking and oral language development. Let your child take the lead and pitch the game at their level. For younger children, games such as “I see a car, (insert child’s name) what do you see?” “I see a tractor. Mammy, what do you see?” and so on are perfect for building confidence and reinforcing language or visual cues. You can build on this by commenting on colour and/or size, such as “I see a red car, (insert child’s name) what do you see?” Have fun with […]

Alan’s Story
“My son speaks with confidence now.” Six-year-old Alan from Dublin attended Speech & Language Therapy at Sensational Kids for seven months to work on certain speech sounds that he had been struggling to pronounce. Alan’s mother was concerned about his speech sounds but also Alan’s shyness and the fact he struggled to speak up and make friends. “Other children would say hi and Alan wouldn’t respond as he was afraid to talk.” Since starting Speech Therapy at Sensational Kids, Alan’s confidence has grown. His class teacher has even remarked on the changes and has said Alan now puts his hand up in class and speaks with confidence. Alan’s mum says Alan talks to everyone now and has lots of friends. Alan had been on a public waiting list for two years and had received four face-to-face Speech Therapy sessions, but his mum said it was not enough to improve his […]

Sensational Kids, Ireland’s leading non-profit organisation catering for children of all abilities through therapy supports and learning resources has surveyed over 600 parents to learn more about their family’s dental habits. The results speak for themselves with 88% of parents stating that toothbrushing is a cause of stress for their family. The taste and smell of toothpaste was identified by many as an issue as well as the length of time that children spend brushing their teeth. For children who struggle with the flavour of toothpaste, Oranurse Unflavoured Toothpaste, which retails at €6 and is available from www.sensationalkids.ie or instore at Sensational Kids Kildare, Clonakilty or Claremorris, has proved helpful. In addition to being unflavoured, it is also non-foaming which is another potential issue for some children. This toothpaste has really helped decrease stressful toothbrushing moments across Ireland and unlike some unflavoured or non-mint toothpastes it still has […]

“Our little Girl is living a full and happy life now” Aisling received her autism spectrum disorder report at the age of four. She only had 3 or 4 words, no grammar structure and was unable to construct a sentence. She had no reciprocal speech, poor intonation, and her speech patterns were distorted. Aisling could not talk, gave no eye contact and could not communicate properly. Her mom remembers “As I drove her in our car, I would adjust my rear view mirror so she could not see the tears streaming down my face. Heartbroken does not come close to describing those difficult years”. Since then, Aisling has become a regular visitor to Sensational Kids and the team love working with her!
